The FREE Survey

Woodworm treatment in timberIt is usually necessary to first view the problem before making recommendations to our customers.

We are, however, prepared to give quotations over the telephone for what we would consider standard treatments.

If you are just looking for a price guide we are usually able to give you some indication.

Requests for a survey may result from the customer being aware of a problem and wanting a solution or they may be a request for an inspection to determine if there is an existing problem, e.g. when people are purchasing or selling a property.

woodworm treatment exampleIt may be a mortgage condition that such a survey is carried out.

The telltale signs of a woodworm infestation; past or present; are not always easy to spot.  Beetles are quite happy to infest timber in inaccessible areas such as under the floor and in roof spaces.

An experienced surveyor Martin Smith will usually be able to find such problem areas.  As infestations may not become apparent for a few years it is expedient to have certain parts of the property treated as a precautionary measure.  This is certainly the case for loft timbers in property more than 30 years old.

Most companies when issuing a guarantee would wish to carry out a comprehensive treatment to all areas adjacent to any infestation.  To this end an entire loft would be treated to prevent re-infestation in other parts.

Woodworm infestations can be spotted from the flight exit holes of the adult beetle and sometimes the yellow sawdust like frass produced and expelled by the burrowing larvae or woodworm.  This is easily observed in loft spaces and garages but not under flooring.  An experienced surveyor will know if the flooring is likely to be a risk area and will take a closer look.

Preparation for Treatment

woodwormTreatment is not the drastic process it once was.  The odourless, water-based chemicals we use allow for a one hour re-entry. This means treated parts of the property can be re-used the same day.

If you don’t need to use a treated loft space immediately, then we request it is left overnight to dry out.  It is rarely necessary to vacate a property overnight, although some customers with sensitivities may be happier to do this.

Most treatments would be carried out within the day and usually take a few hours.  It is usually helpful if people and pets vacate while the work is carried out.  This is not necessary for loft spaces.

We expect to do all preparation work ourselves; be it lifting loft insulation and floor coverings (carpets) or moving heavy furniture and items stored in loft spaces.  It may be necessary to cover some items with sheets or treat areas in rotation.  There is no serious risk from contamination with the chemicals we use.

Spray Treatment and Fumigation

woodworm treatment in old buildingsMost treatments are by spray application of a water-based emulsion containing the active ingredient Permethrin.  This is widely used and approved to HSE standards.

Timbers are first cleaned of loose dust and then sprayed twice to refusal.  There may be a gap between the two applications to allow absorption of the initial application.

When treating Death Watch beetle it may be necessary to brush apply a mayonnaise which is slowly absorbed and penetrates deeper into the infested timber.

A fogging machine is sometimes used whereby the chemical in the form of a mist is used to penetrate areas difficult to reach by other means.  We would usually use an organo-boron for such treatments. Once completed areas treated are returned to how we found them.

A 30 year guarantee certificate is issued usually on collection of payment.
